What to Think About During College Signing Season?

Dear First Gen,

First Lady Michelle Obama launched the "Reach Higher Initiative" to motivate every high school student to further their education at a community college, four-year college or university or professional training program. April 26, 2016 was designated as "College Signing Day" in the U.S. for all to declare where they plan to attend in the fall, or wear college gear from the school they currently attend or graduated from.

Recently, I had a conversation with a young person who sought my advice on the best college that would make them more attractive for a Staffer position in a legislator's office. The importance of selecting a college cannot be overstated; it is the prime location to connect with the right people who can teach you the precise steps to become the professional you aspire to be. This particular student narrowed the college choices down to two institutions. They would deliver different outcomes, but they were having a hard time determining which one would lead to achieving the ultimate goal. Here's what I recommended for them.

Four steps to take before College Signing Day:
  1. Create a must-have list: Write down the top three to five requirements of the college or university you plan to attend.
  2. Schedule a meeting with Career Services: Inquire into the intern, extern, or practicum placement locations for students, as well as the strength of the alumni network.
  3. Schedule a meeting with a professor in your major: Discuss the classroom format, office hours, and the variety in course selection.
  4. Confidence check: Decide whether the institution is in fact a solid decision for YOU that will give you the confidence you need to succeed.

BONUS QUESTION:
If you are thinking about attending an out-of-state college, please ask yourself: "AM I 100% COMMITTEED & DISCIPLINED?"
  • If you have a strong desire to return home to find employment after graduation, then think about the likelihood of you maintaining the necessary relationships during the tenure of your college education. Those relationships will be vital for you to find out about job opportunities in whatever state you will be seeking employment. If you have the proper discipline, this could be easily accomplished with summer internships or semester practicums in your home state, as well as bi-monthly or quarterly check-ins with your old and new contacts.

The college you “sign” or enroll with should have all the key components to learn, thrive, and present you with the job opportunities in the career or profession you seek upon graduation.

Tell me: What are your tips for choosing the right college?
